About Free State Music Association

Our History and Objectives

Free State Music Association is a music association driven by membership, partnerships, stakeholder relations and was established with the aim of bridging the gap between Free State Musicians, DJs, record companies and Collecting societies. Currently based in Bloemfontein Free State but services the whole of Free State, South Africa and across the world. Fostering partnerships, promote local musicians and DJs to National and international market. Host conferences, workshops, capacity building programs locally, nationally and internationally to have conversations/engagements on music business.

Free State Music Association was established in 2019 and formerly registered in 2022, with the aim of bridging the gap between Free State Musicians, DJs, record companies and Collecting societies. Run and curate cultural and creative industries projects and programmes, To foster partnerships, promote local musicians and DJs to National and international market.

• To ensure compliance with legislation and influences legislation affecting the Association and its members. Bridge a gap between collecting societies, record labels musicians and DJs.
• We also host music conferences, workshops, capacity building programs locally, nationally and internationally to have conversations/engagements on music business.
• We promote the business affairs of our members through equitable commercial terms in the industry and promote access to markets.
• We ensure that licence income is generated from usage of sound and video recordings controlled by our members accrues to rights owners and performers.
• Promote promotional opportunities and exposure for local music on radio and television (local content).
• Promote commercial activity for members through on-line and digital business and increase awareness of the FSMA business in the market through marketing, recruitment and communication.
• FSMA ensures Free State music is represented nationally and internationally and promote Free State cultural identity through music.
• We actively undertake social and economic transformation in the music industry and partake of structures promoting similar objectives.
• As an extension of our services we intend and have a task to also be involved in projects and programmes that seeks to promote and develop the cultural and creative sector but not limited to music.

To pro-actively serve and represent the interests and development of the Free State musicians and independent record labels across Province and the world.

Vision

To have independent Musicians and record label occupying the biggest market share, independent artists and their music get greater visibility, and national and international policies adequately provide market access and cultural diversity.
